Super 8 Wedding Film

Super 8 can be an amazing alternative to the usual full wedding film. You might think that using old, outdated technology is a waste of time considering the camera in your pocket can film in 4k. There’s something undeniably honest and raw about having your wedding captured on Super 8 instead of digital video. It’s pure nostalgia in every second and feels almost like your Grandad was there filming with his old school camera.

Filming short and precise bursts throughout the day means that you get to see the whole day unfold naturally whilst still telling the whole story of your wedding. If someone gave you the option of looking at your grandparents wedding photos or watching their wedding film, I know what I would vote for.

The Super 8 facts:

  • Each roll of film is about 3 minutes 30 seconds. This means that I don’t over shoot everything, but choose the right moments and curate the perfect selection of frames from your day.

  • It works best in brighter areas. The beach will always look ‘chefs kiss’. Dancing is a whole other level of awesome though. A big chunk of light captures all the atmosphere on Super 8.

  • It’s not an exact science - it can go wrong (Very rare event but a possibility).

Once recorded using a 1970’s camera, its sent to the labs in London, in turn sent to Germany for developing with very specific chemicals, back to the UK, scanned to digital and then finally back in my possession. It’s a well oiled machine but with so many moving parts you have to know that there is a risk.

  • Sometimes I’ll even give the camera to a guest for the full ‘home movie style’ for a few shots. It looks awesome!

  • There are many film emulator fakes of Super 8. They all suck! If you’re going to do something, I always say do it properly. No matter how many filters you put on digital it will never be recreated properly.

Who is Super 8 for?

Anyone and everyone. If you’re looking for an upgrade to your wedding photography without having a full videography team there, then this is perfect.

Photography is still your focus but don’t want to entirely miss out on video?

If you want something different to every other wedding video out there.

All valid reasons to have a Super 8 wedding video.

For reference. This film was captured by myself alongside a second photographer whilst the main focus of the day was photography and the Super 8 was a little something something extra on the side ;)
